Endometriosis

Do you have Endometriosis?

Did you know pelvic floor physical therapy can help with this? Endometriosis is defined as having endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus which can result in pain.

Common symptoms associated with endometriosis are:

  • Unbearable abdominal cramps associated with menstruation.

  • Heavy periods that prolong for several days

  • Heavy menstrual flow

  • Bowel and urinary disorders

  • Nausea and/or vomiting

  • Pain during and after sexual activities

  • Infertility

  • Chronic fatigue

Can pelvic floor physical therapy help with pelvic pain?

YES! Often times endometriosis is commonly associated with pelvic floor dysfunction. Chronic inflammation of the endometrial tissue can cause severe pelvic and abdominal pain. This can lead to excessive tightening of the pelvic floor muscles.

Common complications of tightened pelvic floor muscles can lead to:

  • Pelvic Pain

  • Emptying the bladder or bowel

  • Painful Intercourse

  • Pain in the back, hips, and sacroiliac joint

  • Urinary frequency, burning or pain

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Painful bowel movements and fecal incontinence

  • Not being able to get a proper gynecological exam with the speculum

  • Pain with wearing tampons

Unfortunately, the most common advice given is there is surgery is the only option. But, that’s simply not true.

Here at Shift Physical Therapy, our Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists can:

  • Assess the pelvic floor muscles (get overactive muscles to start at a better resting baseline so they have more to give & can turn on when you need them)

  • Improve pressure management (breath strategies, running technique)

  • Strengthen/build endurance.

  • Finally, we can build hip & core strength so the ENTIRE system runs efficiently.
