Recommended Physical Therapy Timeline

  • Pregnancy Rehab

We recommend coming in between 8-12 weeks gestation. We teach you how to manage intra-abdominal pressure -this can be important for managing prolapse and preventing excessive pressure on your pelvic floor. We will discuss birth prep for your pelvic floor, which includes how to lengthen your pelvic floor, learn about different birthing positions, and different pushing techniques. We will also teach you about what is happening to your body at different stages during pregnancy. As your pregnancy progresses we can help manage aches and pains that come up and teach you how to modify exercises to allow you to stay active during your pregnancy. Around 34 weeks gestation we will teach you how to perform perineal massage to improve pelvic floor mobility and decrease risk/degree of tearing.

  • Postpartum Rehab

We recommend starting physical therapy around 2-3 weeks. These first few weeks are important to restore normal breathing patterns and your connection to your pelvic floor (this is important even if you delivered vaginally!). As we restore these, we will begin to transition in strengthening and loading the pelvic floor as well as restoring core/back strength. This process is important to ensure pelvic floor health and integrity and improve/prevent urine leakage and prolapse symptoms.
