Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

Are you experiencing low back pain during pregnancy?

Although having low back pain during pregnancy is common, it is not normal. There are many things that can be contributing to low back pain, but you don’t have to live with it. Unfortunately, most advice that is given is to just deal with the pain because it should go away after pregnancy. But why wait when there are things that we can do now to get you out of pain! Back pain during pregnancy can occur for a number of reasons, but no need to worry, pelvic floor physical therapy can help with this!

Causes of postpartum low back pain

Pelvic Floor Weakness & Prolapse

The body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy, but major changes occur at the pelvic floor, most commonly. When the pelvic floor is not functioning properly, it can put extra stress and strain on the pelvic floor.

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Sacroiliac joint pain occurs in the back of our pelvis around where our “back dimples” are.

Pubic Symphysis Pain

Pubic symphysis pain or symphysis pubic dysfunction (SPD) occurs in the front of the pelvis. Many muscles attach here such as pelvic floor muscles and hip adductors (groin muscles).

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic girdle pain is a combination of sacroiliac joint pain and pelvic girdle pain.

Can pelvic floor physical therapy help?

YES! Here at Shift Physical Therapy, our Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists can:

  • Assess the pelvic floor muscles (get overactive muscles to start at a better resting baseline so they have more to give & can turn on when you need them)

  • Improve pressure management (breath strategies, running technique)

  • Strengthen/build endurance.

  • Finally, we can build hip & core strength so the ENTIRE system runs efficiently.
